After the Sioux defeated General Castor in "The Little Horn," "Burying My Heart on an Injured Knee," "intertwined the perspectives of three characters: Charles Eastman (Beach) and the young Dartmouth educated Sioux doctor Ne Osheesa were seen as living evidence of successful assimilation; The proud Lakota chief Sitting Bull (played by Schellenberg) refuses to comply with the US government's policy of depriving his people of their identity, dignity, and holy land - Kingsoft, Dakota; And Senator Henry Dawes (Quinn), who was one of the government's policy makers on Indian affairs.
